Good morning! How was the holiday weekend? Ready for the week? Making some coffee? Shaking off the rust? Ready to embrace the summer with vigor and enthusiasm?

Trump has been telling a number of people he’s in contact with that he expects he will get reinstated by August (no that isn’t how it works but simply sharing the information).

Talk of a Myanmar-style coup in the United States has been popular among some Trump supporters and QAnon believers for months. https://t.co/PVFKQ6LukA

“Trump has been telling a number of people he’s in contact with that he expects he will get reinstated by August,” reports Maggie Haberman.

I bet you think that’s crazy and that it couldn’t happen. I bet you read it and thought “wow Donald Trump is crazy. What a lunatic. Donald Trump lives in Willy Wonka’s chocolate factory and he spends all day eating candy trees and drinking chocolate rivers and all that sugar has turned his brain into mush.” Well guess what, doc? All it would take is a bunch of democrats in the House becoming Republicans, throwing control of the chamber to the GOP. The House GOP then needs to elect Trump as Speaker of the House. (You don’t actually need to be in congress to be Speaker.) This Trump led House will then impeach both Biden and Harris. In the Senate, 17 Democrats will have to join every Republican in convicting Biden and Harris and removing them from office. The Speaker of the House (Trump) will then be elevated to the presidency.

I’m just kidding. His brain is obviously mush.

While it's funny to joke about Trump, since he's such a clod, people who Know These Things are worried, from the e-mail traffic I have seen from the two I know who are on that list. There is concern about the "pro-Trump" sector of the military - they're there, trust me, and they are "over-represented" in the Special Operations Forces (consider that 1/3 of those arrested for the Capitol insurrection are former military, when veterans are less than 10% of the general population). As a retired three-star, Flynn can be recalled to active duty and court-martialed for disrespect of the government and advocacy of sedition, and there's a substantial number of people among ex-military who think he should be the subject of "exemplary punishment" as a warning to the rest.

Yeah, I know, that sounds like "crazy talk" too. But six years ago it was "crazy talk" to think Trump would ever be president.

"I’m just kidding. His brain is obviously mush."

You're taking the meaning of the word 'reinstated' too literally. Given that the various Trump-supporting wingers running around talking about overthrowing the government (don't forget the 120 retired generals who wrote the letter saying the election was fraudulent), I think we have to assume that they are working themselves up to another coup attempt. They likely have the support of various foreign powers (the Russians for one, obvs).

So you should probably be keeping your eyes peeled for signs of a coup attempt.

The Rs have traditionally favored August for floating lunatic theories, the unite the right rally occurred in August and so on. It's just before the beginning of campaign season, and Congress and lots of government officials are out of town.

So 'reinstated' may simply mean a rogue military unit on the streets of DC attempting to seize the White House. Trump left his Floridian version of the 'Bavarian Redoubt' and is currently in New Jersey. Well-positioned.

Does this mean Trump himself has an insidious plan? Oh, hell no. It means Trump can't keep his mouth shut (which is why I wanted Twitter to put him back on, so we could keep track of what he is up to). It's the people around him, yearning for power and glory, who are the problem (and have been for a long long time). Without them, Trump's just babbling. With them, they could (perhaps) do some damage.
